Many households across Britain continue to face the cost of living crisis. UK households are facing more financial pressure to meet their demands, which makes it harder to put money aside for the summer. However, there are some simple things that you can do to help save some money! Take a look at these easy summer saving tips for renters that will help you save money and still have a good time this summer!

Take advantage of the great outdoors

Turn off the TV and try spending more time outside as the days grow longer. You could take a walk, ride your bike, or have a picnic at the park or at the beach. It’s a great opportunity to get some fresh air in the nice weather and will help to reduce your energy bills

An outdoor hobby like hiking or gardening can be a fantastic way to keep yourself entertained & spend more time in nature. By canceling your entertainment subscriptions and spending more time outdoors, you could save hundreds of pounds over the summer!

Claim What’s Yours

As the cost of living rises across the country, thousands of households are starting to feel the pinch. Thankfully, the UK government has introduced a variety of schemes & assistance packages to help those who are the worst affected. If you pay council tax, you may be eligible for this payment. Check your local council’s website for more information.

There is another cost of living payment available to low-income households. This will be paid automatically in the same way you usually get your benefit or tax credits. You can find more information about this payment on the Government’s website.

Check if you’re eligible for a Council Tax reduction

Depending on who you live with in your rental property, you may be entitled to a reduction in your council tax. This could be anywhere from a 25% reduction, to a total removal for your requirement to pay council tax.

You could be eligible for a council tax discount if:

  • You live alone, or you only live with under-18’s
  • You live in a student household or you’re a non-student living with students
  • You’re on a low income, or receive pension credit.

You can find the full range of council tax discounts online, or by checking with your local council.

Help is out there, don’t be afraid to take it

Sort Out Your Summer Clothes

You may feel tempted to invest in a new wardrobe over the summer. But, before falling into the purchasing temptation, take a look at your existing summer wardrobe. Keep the items of clothing that you like, and consider selling the ones that are collecting dust. This will allow you to make some extra cash and could help build your budget for a new summer wardrobe!

Discover Free Events & Experiences

Summer fun doesn’t have to be expensive; in fact, you can do a lot of fun things for free! For example, you could take a trip to the nearby beach or park, and enjoy some time with your family.  You can also do some online research to discover free events in your area, such as festivals and markets. Check your local government’s website to discover what’s going on in your area, or join local Facebook groups to see what others are up to!

Staycation vs Vacation

We all love a holiday, but for some of us traveling abroad is just too much of a stretch this year. Thankfully there’s an option for vacation-loving families who are on a tighter budget: the Staycation.

By staying in the UK this summer, you can cut down on expensive travel & accommodation. Sticking to day trips, cheap weekends, and camping breaks can save you a lot of money while also being a great deal of fun. Given the recent travel disruption, it is also likely to be less stressful!
